Yves Pierre Kernisan was born in Haiti in 1936. Details about his early education are not known to us beyond the fact that he obtained a DipArch in the US, arriving in New York, from Haiti, in 1962. By 1966 he was in the UK, where he enrolled on the postgraduate ‘General Design’ course run by the Architectural Association’s (AA) Department of Development and Tropical Studies, in London. He graduated with a postgraduate Diploma in July 1967 and appears to have remained in the UK, becoming a naturalised citizen in 1973. He founded his own practice, ‘Environmental Design and Planning Consultants’ (EDPC) in 1986, together with a series of subsidiary companies, focusing upon structural engineering, interior design and architectural planning.
