Winant Rooskandar is an Indonesian architect who was educated as part of the first batch of architectural students in the Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia (1950). He appears to have acquired much experience in design for educational buildings prior to joining the Architectural Association. In 1964, when he was affiliated with the Asian Regional Institute for School Building Research in Bandung, Indonesia, he published a paper entitled “Environmental Control in School Buildings Through Planting,” which has since been widely-circulated and which advocates for the planting of trees around schools and their integration in design strategies. A few years later, in 1967, he published another report on Laboratories in secondary schools in a volume by the center for research on school buildings. In 1969-70, he joined the Department of Tropical Architecture (DTA) at the Architectural Association, where he is likely to have developed his specialization in climatic considerations within educational buildings, and subsequently earned a postgraduate diploma. By 1991-92, he is recorded in the World Bank Archives, as having been part of the resident staff in Indonesia engaging in a project on Educational Development in the country.
