Ramón Evaristo Coronel González was born in Paraguay and educated in Asunción, where he attended Liceo San Carlos before enrolling at the Facultad de Arquitectura, Universidad Nacional de Asunción (FADA‑UNA). In 1967 he travelled to London to join the Architectural Association (AA), studying in the Department of Tropical Architecture (DTA) during the 1967–1968 academic year, taking the General Design course and then continuing the following September to take the Department’s Teacher Training course (1968-1969). Upon returning to Paraguay, González Coronel pursued a career that combined heritage advocacy, urban planning, and architectural design. Although his built works as an architect are scarcely documented, they are nonetheless considered significant, with a Paraguayan architectural history survey called Modernidad arquitectónica en el Paraguay published in 2014 describing his projects and those of his peers, Homero Duarte and Natalio Bareiro, as representing the first authentic examples of modern architecture by Paraguayan architects. Given this statement, it is evident that González Coronel was engaged in architectural practice in the years following graduation from the AA—an underdocumented period overshadowed by his later career in conservation and urban planning. By the 1990s, González Coronel had taken up a position as technical advisor within the Secretariat for Housing (SENAVITAT, later named the Ministry of Urbanism, Housing and Habitat, or MUVH), a role that he continues to perform as of 2025. Within this position, he collaborated on numerous major projects, such as sitting on the competition panel for the 2014 Asunción Historic Center Master Plan. In 2017, he collaborated with the Secretaría Nacional de Cultura as part of a museology and heritage platform, contributing to preparations for an International Museology Encounter during Paraguay’s Semana de la Cultura. Later, in 2020, González Coronel participated in the Patrimonio Vivo del Centro Histórico de Asunción, an Inter-American Development Bank supported project which focused on heritage-driven urban revitalization. He represented MUVH on this team, helping to develop strategies to safeguard historic buildings and public spaces in Asunción’s downtown, producing an actionable portfolio of projects tied to a new governance framework, funding opportunities, and education and tourism initiatives around heritage. Beyond his public sector work, González Coronel is known for his photographic documentation of historic architecture in Asunción, with images and commentary published in the Paraguayan press. Despite his discreet public profile, Coronel González's career points to an influential presence within Paraguay's urban and cultural sectors, distinguished by a decades-long commitment to public service.
