AA alum Liam Denhamer (AADipl 2018) designs the exhibition Proof of Concept for Jon Rafman at Sprüth Magers, Los Angeles. The exhibition is an expansive installation that immerses visitors in the world of Jon Rafman. The installation is directly tied to the ethos of Rafman’s work; capturing the exhaustive, effective and encompassing nature of the digital age.

Printed tarps wrap the interior of the gallery, acting as portals into the alternate worlds Rafman has created. Meanwhile, multiple monitors, both large and small, display a continuous loop of short-form films. The films mimic a 24-hour television station – mainstream media functions as a hypnotic mirror of the digital era.

Blending the collective viewing experience of MTV’s golden age with emerging technologies, Proof of Concept explores our evolving relationship with artificial intelligence, nostalgia and media consumption.

Liam Denhamer is the director of Juvenilia and a faculty member at the UCLA School of Architecture.
