The University of Stuttgart was founded in 1829, making it one of the oldest technical universities in Germany. From 1876 the university became known as the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart and in 1900 gained the ability to grant doctoral degrees. A final name change took place in 1967 when the current name of "Universität Stuttgart" was adopted. Today, one of the largest and prestigious of the German architecture schools, comprising 16 institutes, the Architecture and Urban Planning Faculty has also has rich historic roots in the 'Stuttgart School' and can trace its origins back in the 19thC when architecture was first taught as a subject within the university.
